The shortcut at the service of mankind
Welcome to the seventh issue of AI News by RISE. At RISE, we see Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an area of innovation that can improve the conditions of life on earth and contribute to a more sustainable society.

In this issue you can read more about one of our new data lab projects, how AI can stop the spread of disinformation and also about if AI is the answer to climate change.

With this last newsletter for 2019 we also wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Space data lab useful for society and industry
Space data is used in a wide range of fields, for example weather forecasts, monitoring the climate, forestry and agriculture. The National Space Data Lab will be a national knowledge and data hub for Swedish authorities' work on earth observation data and for the development of AI-based analysis of data, generated in space systems. The purpose is to increase the use of data from space for the development of society and industry and for the benefit of the globe.

In this project a data lab for space data is started and the purpose at the end of the project is to offer different users access lab.

AI - the answers to climate change?
Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges we face. Artificial intelligence could provide innovative solutions to a wide variety of problems ranging from cancer treatment to self-driving vehicles. Is it possible that AI might also provide the answers to climate change?

AI will stop the spread of disinformation
In today’s digital world, we are accosted by thousands of messages. We seldom have time to reflect on whether the messages were real or false, and there is a growing volume of disinformation and propaganda. RISE has initiated the project "Fact Checking AI" in which artificial intelligence is utilised to check the veracity of the information.

The shortcut at the service of mankind
How is it going for mankind? Dark clouds are piling up in the sky. Scientists have given us 10 years to shift behaviours enough to mitigate the climate crisis. Burning forests, food and water shortages, heavy jobs that wear out our bodies prematurely and large flows of refugees as a result of political irregularities and our inability to understand one another.

AI has the potential to solve the greatest crisis of our time and give people the opportunity to stay on Earth.

Cities need data to become smart
Data is a prerequisite for creating smart cities where digital tools and services make things easier for inhabitants and streamline the city’s functions from a sustainable and long-term perspective. Sweden is far ahead in terms of digitalisation, but far behind many other countries when it comes to open data.

How to make deep learning as energy efficient as the brain

In comparison to the human brain, deep learning can require up to 1,000 times more energy to perform the same functions. This means that if smart glasses used deep learning to recognize objects, the battery would last only 25 minutes, studies have shown. In a perspective paper published in Nature, Purdue University researchers recommend that deep-learning networks mimic electrical signals in the brain, called “spikes,” to be more energy efficient.

This T-Shirt could make you invisible to deep neural networks

Two men walk side-by-side toward a camera. One wears an all-black outfit. The other is in khakis and a white T-shirt with a brightly colored, abstract pattern centered on the front. But the artificial intelligence analyzing the video only reports one person. The person in the T-shirt is invisible!
