It will not explode
Let’s take a peek into the future of how much energy data centers in Sweden will use by 2030? The report "Energy Use in Data Centers and Digital System", written by us at RISE data center ICE, was recently released for the Swedish Energy Agency. Here we figure out how much energy that will be used 2025 and 2030!

Does generative AI run on thin air?
As more and more companies are releasing generative AI services such as ChatGPT, stand-alone or integrated into other products, the question arises how costly they are on the environment and in energy use. We asked ChatGPT how much energy it uses to train itself – what did it say?

Generative AI does NOT run on thin air!
In this blog post, we aim to delve deeper into the energy use involved in training and using large language models. It's important to note that there is limited detailed research available on this topic, and our analysis is based on data collected from various sources, providing an initial perspective that may require updates in the future.

Edge. What is the big deal?
In today's digital landscape, technological advancements are reshaping the way we communicate. One of the most groundbreaking developments is deployment of 5G and in the future 6G. These next-generation networks are not just about faster downloads; they have the potential to revolutionize how we experience connectivity in every aspect of our lives.

Data Center heat recovery
Piotr Kowalski has written a article in the Polish magazine Refrigeration och air conditioning. He is looking at the history and trends of recovering heat from data centre. He has reached out to us at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden to share our knowledge and experience from our vast field of research.

EECONE – Sustainable electronics
The objective of this project is to investigate the corresponding technologies along the entire value chain, from design, manufacture and use all the way to recycling. EECONE is one of the Key Digital Technologies research projects supported by the European Union as a Joint Undertaking.

RISE is leading subactivity 4.3 on the second life of electronics as well as a use case to look at the decision of digital hardware refresh and reuse.

Virtual visit to RISE Wedistrict demonstrator
We welcome you all to a high-level virtual visit of the Luleå demonstrator as part of the Wedistrict project.

The proof-of-concept demonstrator has been decommissioned as of the end of June 2023, but we have collected vast amounts of data in operating the demonstrator. Although parts of the setup were running as early as April 2022, the heat recovery to the facility was not finalized and monitored until early January 2023.

Why immersion cooling and why now?

Our partner Castrol invited Jon Summers, RISE, to participate in their DCD Cooling Innovation Day July 18th together with Lukas Kaluza, Castrol, and Daniel Pope, Submer. During the session they discussed Industry trends that drive the adoption of immersion cooling.

Bring on the plummers

Peter Judge, the executive editor at DatacenterDynamics, writes that we have long heard that air cooling can no longer meet all the cooling demands of today and tomorrow, but now the evidence is there and recommend anyone in doubt to listen to Jon Summers' and Tor Björn Minde's presentation at DCD>Connect. It's a half-hour physics workout that demonstrates that the thermal resistance of air cooling is too high to cool the GPU systems needed for AI systems like GPT-4.
